Homeschool Music Programs


Greater Richmond Homeschool Choirs

The Greater Richmond Homeschool Choirs offer homeschool students the opportunity to participate and perform in a quality choral program. The curriculum is designed to teach proper vocal technique, ensemble skills, music reading, and basic music theory. Students are assigned a choir according to age and ability. Choir members receive both a full choral ensemble rehearsal as well as a small group rehearsal weekly. Rehearsals are held weekly on Thursdays during the school day. Private voice lessons are available as well. The choral ensembles are directed by University of Richmond Professor and James River Singers Artistic Director, David Pedersen. Private Lessons

Open Enrollement

Private lessons provide focused, one-on-one instruction with a master teacher. Weekly private lessons can be scheduled during the school day for the convenience of homeschool students and are offered in 30, 45, and 60 minute sessions. Recitals are included in tuition. Intermediate and advanced students are encouraged to pursue additional performance opportunities such as chamber music and competitions.

Private Instruction is offered on the following instruments: Piano, Guitar, Voice, Violin, Viola, Cello, Bass, Flute, Clarinet, Oboe, Bassoon, Saxophone, Trumpet, Horn, Trombone, Euphonium/Baritone, Tuba, and Percussion. Beginning ages for each instrument varies.

Greater Richmond Homeschool Bands

The Greater Richmond Homeschool Bands offer homeschool students the opportunity to participate and perform in a quality band program. The bands meet weekly on Wednesdays during the school day. Students do not need any previous music experience to participate. The curriculum is designed to teach beginning students through advanced students. There are three ensemble levels: Beginning Band, Concert Band (intermediate), and Symphonic Band (advanced). The bands are directed by the Saint Cecilia Band Program director, Don Crafton. Group Piano Class

Beginning September, 2011

The Greater Richmond School of Music group piano classes for homeschool students are designed to start beginners in a group setting for two years (or four terms). After these important four terms, the student is ready to 'graduate' into private piano lessons. These classes are held during the school day. Classes will focus on incorporating good piano keyboard technique along with listening skills, rhythm, relative pitch through singing, consistent practice routines, theory, and history. Emphasis is placed on good habits from the start. Recitals are included in tuition.

Group Guitar Class

Beginning September, 2011

This course is for beginning guitar students and functions as a general introduction to the guitar. This class will be held during the school day. Students will learn proper left/right hand techniques, rhythm, musical notation, chords, improvisation, and tuning. Literature will be selected from various genres both for the solo guitar as well as the guitar ensemble. Students must provide their own instrument, and recitals are included in tuition.
