What is Greater Richmond School of Music (GRSM)?
Greater Richmond School of Music is the top-rated destination for music education in Richmond, Virginia. We offer both group and private instruction across a diverse array of instruments, including voice, piano, bowed strings, guitar, woodwinds, brass, and percussion.
What makes GRSM different from other music schools?
GRSM is the ONLY school in Richmond where every teacher has a music degree (it is their first criterion for hiring). Our faculty is comprised of passionate musicians and dedicated educators, each member holds a degree in music, bringing a wealth of knowledge and expertise to our students' musical education.
How long has GRSM been in operation?
Starting as The Piano Academy in 2009, it did not take long to recognize that there was need for much more than piano lessons in the Greater Richmond Area, and so within a year the name was changed to Greater Richmond School of Music (GRSM) and the faculty grew to incorporate instruction in almost every instrument. By the end of the decade GRSM was operating out of 12 locations, with over 20 music degreed instructors, serving more than 300 students.

When is registration open?
2025 - 2026 Lesson Registration Now Open! Registration remains open throughout the summer, and tuition will be adjusted accordingly. Please note that students registering after the semester begins are subject to availability of music lessons and scheduling.
Can anyone take lessons?
Please note that only registered students are eligible for lessons. Register early to secure your spot for optimal scheduling options that suit your needs! We focus on community, and creating a haven for aspiring musicians of all ages and skill levels. Whether you're a beginner taking your first steps into the world of music or an experienced player looking to refine your craft, our dedicated instructors are here to guide you on your musical journey.

What instruments do you teach?
We offer both group and private instruction across a diverse array of instruments, including voice, piano, bowed strings, guitar, woodwinds, brass, and percussion.
What lesson formats are available?
Greater Richmond School of Music is a comprehensive music school that offers private and group instruction in many areas of study. Lessons are scheduled weekly and are given in 30, 45, and 60-minute intervals.
Do you offer group classes?
You can try their classes in Early Childhood Music, beginning group Piano/Guitar/Ukulele/Strings, and there is a strong Homeschool Music Program as well.
Are there performance opportunities?
Each semester, our school organizes music recitals open to all registered students who are interested in performing. These recitals offer a supportive and celebratory environment where students can showcase what they've been learning in their lessons, build confidence, and gain valuable performance experience. Participation is completely optional, but strongly encouraged as part of each student's musical growth and development.
Their advanced and intermediate students are encouraged to pursue extra performance opportunities such as chamber music and competitions.

Do you teach at other venues?
The Greater Richmond School of Music (GRSM) will provide music instruction through private, semi-private, and group lessons at TSI Training Center for the 2024-2025 school year. Instruction will be available for Piano, Violin, Viola. Lessons are held on Wednesdays & Thursdays.

What are the qualifications of your teachers?
At Greater Richmond School of Music, our faculty is the heart and soul of our school. Comprised of passionate musicians and dedicated educators, each member holds a degree in music, bringing a wealth of knowledge and expertise to our students' musical education.
All Instructors have Music Degrees, and are professional musicians with a wide range of teaching experience.
Instruments and Equipment
Do I need to bring my own instrument?
Keyboards are provided for on-site use, all other instruments students must bring to their lesson each week. Limited rentals from GRSM are available for keyboards and ukuleles at a rate of $20/month.
